BIOGRAPHY
From Criminologist to 3rd Assistant Director and beyond!
Charanprite Kaur Dhami grew up in West Yorkshire to a Sikh traditional conservative family, so the notion of working in film and tv was quickly quashed with threats of being disowned and disrespecting the family.
Charanprite went to study Criminology at the University of Teesside, then obtaining a Master at the University of Edinburgh. It was there that she found the courage to pursue her dreams of going to Film School, a secret she kept from her parents despite their constant instance that she should go and do a PhD, just like her cousin.
Instead Charanprite got a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield. This was done to obtain the grant and put it towards her film school fund, although she did work as a teacher at HMP Leeds in Armley.
She did get accepted at Prague school, but had to delay her place for one year due to lack of funds. Finally after three years on hard work, Charanprite took her flight to Prague. She only had the courage to tell her parents the week before to which they replied, ‘its such a a waste of money and you will never make it’ followed by ‘don’t come to us asking for money’, something that she never did whilst studying in Prague. She didn’t contact her parents for the whole year she was at film school.
After film school, it took Charanprite six years to get into the industry. During that time her parents labelled her a loser, encouraged her to be an air stewardess but she didn’t give in and got accepted as a Production Assistant through the charity Creative Access to work on ‘God’s Own Country’.
After working on the multi million pounds Bollywood movie ‘Gold’ where she was split between the Production and Assistant Directing department, she got the email address of the LP of ‘Ackley Bridge’. She then wrote him a cold email to the LP and was lucky to be given by interview the LP Matthew Hamilton and the Producer Alex Lamb, who very kindly took a chance on her to be a Runner on the show Charanprite took that opportunity and ran with it, never looking back. She loves being an AD and has been lucky to work on shows such ‘Everyone Else Burns’ and the movie ‘Everyone is talking about Jamie’ where she fulfilled her dream of working on a Warp Films production.
She was on the AD interview panel for ScreenSkills Trainee Finder and has done work experience shadowing the 1st AD Terry Needham for a Tom Hooper commercial in 2021 organised by Creative Access.
Charanpite is a BAFTA Connect member and on the Screenskills ‘Film Forward’ Scheme
